THE MONTREAL WEEKEND TO END WOMEN'S CANCERS BECOMES THE ONEWALK TO CONQUER CANCER

Next generation fundraiser will consist of a 25-kilometre walk and festival experience in Montreal and will enable each participant to raise money for a cancer fund of their choice at the Jewish General Hospital's Segal Cancer Centre.

MONTREAL, August 23, 2015 - The Weekend to End Women’s Cancers announced a historic transition of Quebec’s largest multi-day walk for women’s cancers into the OneWalk to Conquer Cancer. The next generation fundraiser will consist of a 25-kilometre walk through the picturesque streets and communities of Montreal and an inspiring festival experience in one day to raise vital funds for the Jewish General Hospital’s Segal Cancer Centre.

“The Walk has a brand new name and broader appeal so that each participant can raise funds for the cancer type they care the most about,” said Myer Bick, President and CEO of the Jewish General Hospital Foundation.

“When a participant registers for OneWalk, they select the cancer fund the dollars they raise will support. Funds raised through OneWalk to Conquer Cancer support Personalized Cancer Medicine including life-saving cancer research, treatment, care and prevention programs for all cancers at the Jewish General Hospital’s Segal Cancer Centre in Montreal,” added Bick.

This year, over 96,400 women and over 100,500 men will be diagnosed with cancer in Canada and over 78,000 people will die from the disease, according to the Canadian Cancer Society.

“JGH’s Segal Cancer Centre is a leader in Quebec in implementing a focused and comprehensive approach to fighting cancer through a combination of medical treatment, patient care, family support and scientific research. Our world-leading doctors, researchers and scientists remain focused on developing new technologies in the areas of molecular diagnostics, functional imaging, biomarkers, molecular target discovery and validation, and advanced targeted radiation therapy,” added Bick.

OneWalk to Conquer Cancer will bring together communities of women and men, cancer survivors, donors and all their supporters around a common goal, to conquer all forms of cancer. Registered walkers will select from the following cancer funds will support at the Jewish General Hospital: Innovation Cancer Fund Personalized Cancer Medicine; Breast & Gynaecologic Cancers; Genitourinary Cancer including Prostate Cancer; Head & Neck Cancers; Lung Cancer; Hematologic Cancers including Leukemia & Lymphoma; Gastrointestinal Cancers; Skin Cancer; Adolescent & Young Adult Oncology Program; Cancer Nutrition & Rehabilitation Program.

Bick said funds raised through the OneWalk to Conquer Cancer will continue to help end women’s cancers such as breast or gynecologic cancers as well as many other forms of cancer.

“We are extremely grateful and inspired by our Montreal Weekend community, whose passion and commitment made the event a remarkable success for our cancer program over the last 11 years,” said Bick.

“We will continue walking to conquer a disease that impacts so many of the men and women in our lives. We know that the determined and generous people of Montreal will join us in 2016 for the OneWalk to Conquer Cancer,” added Bick.

The first annual OneWalk to Conquer Cancer will take place on Saturday August 20, 2016.
